Practice Automation: It’s Not Just About Robots

Are you afraid of automation in healthcare?

Maybe you imagine legions of robots replacing nurses, or AI taking care decisions out of the hands of doctors. Maybe you’re picturing something out of The Terminator.

Well, let me just say this loudly for people in the back: *Automation isn’t just about robots.*

You know how Steve Jobs always wore a black turtleneck and jeans? And Mark Zuckerberg practically trademarked the hoodie and tee?

I’m not going to bore you with a lecture on decision fatigue, so let’s just skip to the part where we agree that, by automating their wardrobe choices, Jobs and Zuckerberg could use their billion-dollar robot brain powers for decisions that actually mattered.

Notice their wardrobe automation didn’t involve technology — just a more efficient way of doing things. Automation in healthcare is like that: There’s a lot we can improve even without new technology.

What does automating with little to no tech look like in healthcare?

  • Better procedural checklists to ensure we’re getting it right and consistent for every single patient.
  • A complete onboarding guide and training manual for new hires (or better yet, an online video library that your team can access 24/7).
  • Patient profile templates that optimize the patient intake process, even including a section for the “small stuff” that matters, like how they take their coffee.
  • Daily morning briefings to ensure each staff member knows exactly which patients are coming in that day and why.
  • Reimagining your practice space to maximize efficiency, like equipping each treatment room with everything needed to handle patient check-in, intake, treatment, and payment (if it makes sense for your practice). No more shuffling clients around, and no more waiting for chairs to become available.

Automating processes in healthcare is critical for creating cost and time savings in favor of delivering quality care more efficiently. Chances are, it’ll also reduce employee turnover by removing repetitive tasks and freeing up time for staff to tackle more challenging and rewarding assignments.

At Revance X, we push the boundaries of innovation as we dream up new workflows, refine methods, and iterate based on proven results. And, although it’d be pretty cool, we have yet to send droids to any practice.

So don’t be scared by automation. It doesn’t have to mean expensive new technology or reinventing the wheel, and it certainly doesn’t have to mean robots.

It’s just about removing tedious, manual repetition and creating solutions that are scalable and profitable.

And it’s how we’re going to fix the problems in our healthcare system.
